Tahiti & the Society Islands
Day 1: Depart home / Travel to Tahiti
Fly on JetBlue from your gateway city to Los Angeles Airport. There, you’ll transfer and board your Air Tahiti Nui overnight flight to Papeete, Tahiti.
Day 2: Papeete, Tahiti
Begin your voyage through paradise in the capital of Tahiti, the largest and most populated of the French Polynesian islands. Here you’ll embark the luxurious yet relaxed m/s Paul Gauguin, your home for the next week — and set sail!
Day 3: Huahine
One of the most picturesque and geographically diverse places in the Society Islands group — and one of the best-kept secrets in all of Polynesia — Huahine has been nicknamed the “Garden Island” for its lush forests, untamed landscape, and quaint villages.
Relatively unchanged by the modern world, Huahine offers a slower taste of old Polynesia — as well as something new to explore around every bend, from sacred sites and preserved archaeological landmarks, to the colorful sea life that can be experienced on a SCUBA or snorkeling expedition.
Day 4: Taha’a (Motu Mahana)
About 80% of all vanilla produced in French Polynesia is cultivated in Taha’a, fittingly nicknamed the “Vanilla Island.” It is also an island of intense beauty, with many deep bays fringed with purau trees, incredible tropical colors, and deserted motus (islets), one of which is privately owned by Paul Gauguin Cruises.
You’ll spend a full day at this private island paradise, Motu Mahana — where you can swim in the warm waters, snorkel with tropical fish among green and purple blooms of coral, kayak in the lagoon, play a game of volleyball, savor complimentary beverages and a barbecue feast, indulge in an optional overwater massage, and enjoy musical entertainment and cultural demonstrations by the ship’s onboard troupe.
Days 5-6: Bora Bora
Author James A. Michener once called Bora Bora “the most beautiful island in the world,” and when you see the jagged, emerald-hued peaks of Mount Otemanu rising high above the turquoise lagoon, you’ll understand why.
You’ll have two full days to enjoy the pleasures of this magical isle, either on your own or on a choice of optional excursions, such as a four-wheel-drive safari, jitney tour on “Le Truck”, glass-bottom boat ride, or snorkeling with stingrays. You’ll also have unlimited access to Paul Gauguin Cruises’ private white-sand beach on a motu off the coast with complimentary watersports, volleyball, and refreshments, as well as the option of a romantic overnight escape to an overwater villa in one of the island’s most luxurious resorts.
Days 7-8: Moorea
Rugged peaks, volcanic craters, and lush interiors thick with tropical fruit, fragrant flowers, and forests of gigantic mape, or chestnut trees, make the mountain scenery of Moorea nothing short of remarkable. The island’s peaks are believed to have inspired the mythical Bali Hai of the musical South Pacific.
During your visit, you might embark on an optional excursion, such as a dolphin-watching expedition with a marine biologist or a “Trails of the Ancients” trek with an archaeologist. Or perhaps you’ll browse the shops for indigenous crafts or sample the locally-grown pineapple — said to be the most delicious in all of French Polynesia.
On the evening of Day 8, The Gauguin cruises back to Tahiti, just 11 miles away, for a final night onboard.
Day 9: Papeete, Tahiti / Return home
This morning, you’ll bid farewell to your crew, disembark The Gauguin, and head to the airport for your return flights home, provided by Air Tahiti Nui and JetBlue.
You’ll arrive at your gateway city on Day 10.
